Question -Summer party ideas for a yacht club?
I’m looking for summer party ideas for my yaught club. We can hold parties in both the indoor function room and outside on the deck. The club is right on the beach and we have a small section of the beach to ourselves.
Got any ideas for a party on a budget? Most of our budget goes to the bigger events like 4th of July.
What are some great themes and contests etc?
Suggestions: Well you certainly have an awesome venue for a party. A live band wouldn’t be expensive and would really make the event memorable. Choose your theme, then choose an entertainer of band that fits with the theme. I’m thinking a WW2 Navy Party would be very cool and everyone would look goregous in white with elegant navy hats. Then the band I’d go for would be brass with a duet or quartet who can sing great harmonies with an upbeat wartime forties feel.
Give away prizes for best ladies and gents outfits, and spot prizes for the couple who happen to be dancing on a previously chosen area of the dance floor. This will encourage everyone to dance for at least a few songs.

Our yacht club has an annual beach clam bake on a weekend
The traditional clambake is an all-day affair, although most guests arrive in the evening. We arrive by sailboat
just in time to enjoy a few drinks before the tarpaulin is peeled off the steaming heap of corn, potatoes and soft-shell, cherrystone or littleneck clams. Some clambakes also include lobsters, chickens, sausages and eggs.We include salmon and halibut
Whatever ingredients you choose, this fun and festive event culminates in a meal that is well worth the wait. And while you’re waiting for the main event, have a bowl of creamy clam chowder or some clam cakes to get you in the mood.
10 Steps for a Traditional Clambake
Eary in the day or volunteers do this on the night before:
Dig a pit on the beach, about two feet deep, two feet wide and three feet long.
Line the bottom with large stones.
Build a wood fire over the stones and keep it burning for about two hours, feeding it when necessary, to heat the rocks. Let the fire burn down to embers, about another two hours.
While the fire is winding down, wrap potatoes, littleneck clams, corn on the cob (in husk), onion quarters, mussels and spicy sausages, by group, in cheesecloth or foil.
Cover the coals with a thick layer of seaweed, preferably rockweed which has little pockets of sea water, but other seaweeds will work. This provides both protection from direct heat and the required steam.
Layer the packets of potatoes, clams, corn, onion, mussels and sausage, and then live lobsters, if desired.
Top with another couple inches of seaweed, and if you’re not using rockweed, a couple of quarts of seawater for steaming.
Cover the entire pit with a seawater-soaked canvas weighted down with either rocks or sand.
Continue your party for another hour or two until all the foods are cooked through.
Savor this fabulous summertime feast, served hot with plenty of melted butter and washed down with icy cold beer or sodas
Everyone brings a dish to share and desserts, appetizers, and the kids
wear flotation gear all weekend
The best part is you have a place to sleep on your boat and you dont’ have to drive home.

If your yacht club is not directly on a beach you might want to try a steamed crab/lobsterfest nautically themed party.
There are balloons, paper products, table settings, games, etc with a nautical theme. Name brand products can be purchased in a dollar store or at a party city.
You boil crabs in a huge pot with either crab boil and or Old Bay seasoning. First you can clean the corn and boil it. Or you can roast it on a grill in the husk. Once the corn is cooked the silk comes off easily. Depending on how much help you have the corn can be cleaned and wrapped in foil and roasted. But boiled in water with old bay is also fabulous.
In the pot you need to add an inexpensive large can of beer. One can per two dozen crabs directly in the boiling water. Place live, rinsed crabs in the pot with the boil and or old bay (2-3 heaping tablespoons per dozen crabs) their color will change once they are done. The lobsters can be placed in the pot first and then five minutes later add the crabs. Keeping all of the seafood covered with liquid and a top. You can also add cleaned mussels and or rinsed littlenecks (make sure they aren’t open)
Potatoes white or red rinsed and cleaned can be boiled with the corn or roasted on the grill (wrap in foil). You can leave the skin on. Get a roll of brown or white paper and wrap the tables that people are going to eat at. We bought sand and seaweed to decorate the area for my graduation party. It isn’t absolutely necessary.
Some people boil the seafood and the vegetables together but they release gunk (the seafod) that I dont want to waste time cleaning off. You could also throw a steamer basket with asparagus in the pot. White asparagus will be in season.
Fresh vegetable platters with dip are great appetizers. Also cheese platters with brie, jarlsberg and assorted crackers. If it’s too hot then sit the platter on a metal bowl filled with ice. This is also the way to keep any pasta salads you might want to have or a mixed organic salad.
Good Luck

M, In my opinion, I would can the summer party idea in a way, I would turn it into a working party, then throw the party later in the afternoon. The big chore would be to clean up the small part of the beach and really groom it, throw a BBQ, and don’t be cheap, get the girls to prepare salads for lunch and a couple of guys cook pork sausages and steaks.
Really by giving the beach a good spring clean up and grooming, then you can plan your summer beach party, with BBQ, lets say live band on the deck or DJ.
Can you see where I am going with this? Bribe them with food and drink, if you approach the club the right way, they would be fools not to support you in lets say steaks sausages and maybe a keg.
