Barbie’s Rum Balls

31st August

These are a very easy party favourite and a Christmas party essential in my family. You can keep them in the fridge, but they won’t last long once others know they’re there. I kid myself that they’re good for me too, because they have weetbix in them. I wash them down with a diet drink and that means there’s almost no calories at all!  :-)

Ingredients:Rum Balls

2 Packets Scotch Finger Biscuits, crushed fine in blender

15 weet bix, crushed in blender ( Adjust to suit consistency)

2 cans condensed milk

Heaps of cocoa – approx 2/3 cup – makes it very dark and rich

1 or 2 cups coconut – plus another cup for coating.

2 cups dried fruit – raisins and sultanas

4 generous nips of rum (Artificial run essence is ok, but rum tastes better)

Method:

Soak the fruit in the rum for up to a day, but at least half an hour. The longer the soak, the plumper and juicier the fruit.

Place all ingredients except for half the crushed weet bix in a large bowl. Mix well. Gradually add the weet bix to get the balls to a nice, solid yet moist consistency that will roll into balls and not stick to your hands too much. Roll into balls and coat with coconut a few at a time. Best served cold. Store in fridge.

Makes about 80

Play Party Music Everyone Loves – Not Your Own Favourites

31st August

Party music can make or break your event.

The best advice I can offer regarding music is to play the big hits – not your own favourite music.

The biggest mistake I see at parties is that the hosts either play no music at all, or they play their favourite CDs. Just because you’re passionate about a particular band or style of music, doesn’t mean your guests are. You may have a quite unique preference in music, in which case I’d suggest you play it in the privacy of your car or lounge. For your party, you’ll need to play something else.

Party music should set the scene and should be different for every party theme.

It’s not rocket science, yet people get it wrong so often.

Here are a few examples I would use for:

A Luau : Reggae, Carribean Calypso, summer hits like The Beach Boys music, Days of Summer …

A Halloween party : The Rocky Horror Picture Show CD, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Beat It, Monster Mash, Ghostbusters theme, Purple People Eaters…

A Movie Stars Theme : Movie theme songs like James Bond theme songs, Ghostbusters, Theme from Superman, Batman’s Batdance, Hanky Panky-from Dick Tracey, Pink Panther Theme, Queen’s Flash Gordon..

A 70s Party: 70s music.

See what I mean? You have to theme the music. The whole party should be themed; the music, lighting, decor, tableware and costumes all should compliment each other.

For a party with no set theme, music should be upbeat and happy. No grunge, no  rap, no metal, no classical and no bagpipes! Go for number 1 hits of the decade and you can’t go wrong. If there are songs in there that a couple of people don’t like, at least it’s music they know and if it was popular enough to make it to the charts, then it’s a great choice for a party.

You can download songs from the net for a dollar or two each. It’s a cost effective way to create a CD full of exactly what you want. Try itunes.com whether you want to burn a disc or load the songs on the ipod and play them through your ipod compatible stereo.

Create music with no lessons?

Music Producer

I can’t believe this, yet it’s true.

I just found a really simple program that allows me to produce any kind of music I want, and I’ve never had a single music lesson in my life!

This is like a dream come true. I can produce instrumental mood music, background music, hard rock, rap beats, classic sounds, techno, whatever I want.

So now I can produce great party music myself. Imagine that! This will be awesome for my Halloween party.

Hmm, I might just start getting the gang over to sing for a jamm session now.

Sensational Table Centrepiece!

31st August

I’ve just seen one of the most amazing party table centrepieces ever. My friend Mike is a chef and has perfected this centrepiece and made it so simple anyone can create one just like it.

Centrepieces

Apart from creative ice-carvings, this is the best I’ve ever seen. It’s especially suitable for a luau, wedding or any party where you really want to create a fabulous atmosphere. Best of all, the whole centrepiece can be eaten, so you can save on catering costs.

Mike is selling a kit for under $80 that makes it super simple, but you can just watch a video to see how he puts it together for just $5 instead. Click here to see all the photos of the centrepiece and get the video!

Tip – Scroll Mike’s whole page because the video link is below the  ‘Buy the Complete Kit’  link.

How do I make my halloween costume more weather appropriate?

30th August

How do I make my halloween costume more weather friendly?
Im going as a Goth Cheerleader Im planning on wearing thing short black skort with a black tank top and a black long sleeve t-shirt over it. Also im gonna wear black tights. What can i add to the costume to keep me warm enough. the news said its gonna be like 58 degrees around here on halloween

How can i make my costume more weather appropriate?

Wear some long johns underneath. Nobody will be able to see them. They’re also part wool which will help keep you warm. You’ve also go the advantage because black is the color with the lowest albedo. Therefore, it will absorb more heat.

Good party themes for a 13 year old boys?

30th August

I’m planning a surprise party for my 13 year old brother and I was wondering what were some good themes or things to do that he might like?

One of the boys I used to babysit for just had his 14th birthday. I suggested to his mother that they all go to Lazer Tag and it turned out to be a great hit.

What are good birthday party ideas for an 11 year old?

30th August

My daughter’s birthday is June 5th and she wants to have a slumber party. However, I think that would be too much trouble and tried to convince her to do something else. She told me that kids her age don’t do parties at places anymore. Any ideas?

If you have backyard, you can suggest her throwing a camping party. Invite 3-4 of her best friends to join the party. Setting up the tend themselves will be one of interesting activities. Don’t forget to provide plenty of foods, so they can roast over the open flames. This way, you can still watch their activity, yet your daughter wish about a slumber birthday celebration is met.

Question – Can you suggest some funny halloween costume ideas?

28th August

For Halloween this year I want to have a really funny costume.  I’ve seen some really good costumes on the internet, but I have a tight budget.

Suggestion: 1. Word plays are always funny. Get a pink feather boa, pink wig or hair spray, pink clothes and pink sunglasses. When people ask what you are,  tickle them with the boa and say “tickled pink!”

2. Or make yourself look like a really old man, like a cliche. Get an old hat, old man’s clothes and a fake beard.  Then from a  jokes and gifts shop get a prcatical joke flower ‘water pistol’ and attach it to the hat. Insert the tube from the flower down through your beard and shirt to your hand. When people ask what you are, squirt them and say, “I’m an old geyser.”

3. Make yourself look like a cross between an Asian person and an alien. If you’re Asian, or bald or both, all the better) . Wear a silver suit or something an ‘alien’ might wear. When people ask what you are, tell them you’re Alienation (alien Asian).

Makeup: Cover your whole face and neck with eithera high coverage foundation with a yellowish tint or with silver acrylic artists paint. Using sorbolene or face cream underneath makes acrylic art paint quite blendable. Use a black eye pencil draw all around your eyes and make short lines from the corner of your eye outwards to create a thinner appearance on the eye. It’s just a cliche of course. Don’t use any lipstick as you want your lips to blend in with your face like ‘an alien’. Using the eye pencil, draw some short high eyebrows, like little rectangles.

Question- Do you have ideas for a unique party in a bus?

28th August

Our club is going to the city for a party, about 45 minutes away,  and we want to hire a bus so we can all ride together and start the party on the way.   Got any suggestions for what we could do? There will be about 30 passengers.
Suggestion: You could hire a  Double Decker sightseeing bus with an open top. You can’t have passengers sitting on the top deck during freeway driving, but passengers could just move to the lower level during the freeway portion of the trip. You could commentate the trip and make up some fake tour guide stories. For example,  “In the school grounds over here to the left, you will see a tin storage shed. That is where I lost my virginity  in high school. And further along here you can see a very popular cemetary that people are dying to get in to …”
